H. Washbourne, 1844. Hardcover. Acceptable. 1844. No Edition Remarks. 351 pages. No dust jacket. Brown cloth. Volume V. Black and white illustrations throughout. Slight cracking to hinges and gutters causing boards and binding to be loose. Frontispiece and title page detached but still present. Pages and illustrations have light tanning and foxing throughout. Top corner of front free endpaper cut out. Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Sticker to rear board. Wear marks overall.

Original full calf leather binding, rubbed and worn, internally good with some browning on the end papers and title page, foxing in places, states "embellished with engravings" but there is only one full page engraving and plus two small vignette designs, one on the title page and one at the end of the dedication, no publisher's date printed but the engraving is dated 1794 in very small print and has "Cooke's Pocket Edition". . London.: A. J. Valpy., 1834. First printings all. . Hard. Fair+. 12mo. 7".. With historical illustrations and portraits.. Fair+. A shabby set. Publishers faded and worn plum coloured moire. Spines chipped and spine covers missing from a couple of volumes. Some joints and hinges are cracked and some boards have been re-adhered after having become detached. There is some superficial damage to leaves. Vol. I is missing half of the first leaf of publishers ads' to the rear (after last text leaf) and the next couple of leaves are creased and a little torn. Foxed to outermost leaves.

Original Red Cloth covers with embossed decoration and gilt Battle Standards to front and back. Gilt arms, standards, wreath and lettering to spines. Each Volume has 12 Engraved Plates, protected by Tissue Guards. Frontis of Vol 1 is an Engraving of Queen Victoria in her wedding dress. Illustrated Title Page to Vol 1 depicts the death of William Rufus, engraved by J. Rogers. Text pages in very nice, clean condition. Only a little marginal foxing to Plates. Binding of a few volumes is a little fragile, a few plates a little loose, most are tight. Some edgewear to covers, mostly at spine ends and corners. Some spine ends have small tears. Attractive set.
