Book opens right to left. 511 pages. 32mo: 4.75 by 3.5 inches in size and 1.75 inches thick. Sewn binding. Cream colored celluloid cover (front, back and spine) with cream cloth underneath. An ornate brass medallion is centered in the middle of front cover. A plain hinged brass clasp is missing the peg to hold the volume closed. The endpapers are an ivory moire. Both pastedowns are cracked. The sewn binding has several loose sections: pages 160-192 are held in by a loose thread, pages 193 to 222 are detached and laid in. The book is shaken. The page marked 322 is actually page 223. The remainder of the book appears firmly bound. The pages are bordered with bright gilt on all sides. Jewish marriage contracts (Ketuba or Ketubbah) show the artistic taste of the lands in which Jews have resided. The Ketuba expresses the joy and jubilation of the marriage. The Ketubbah is a document recording the financial obligations which the husband undertakes toward his wife in respect of, and consequent to, their marriage, obligations which in principle are imposed on him by law. Most Jewish communities have followed the custom of decorating the Ketubbah. Includes marriage contracts from countries in the diaspora as disparate as India and Italy.

First book by Rabbi Lewis Browne, a revealing history of the Jews, with 50 illustrated maps by the author. Widely regarded as one of the foremost comparative religionists of his day, Browne graduated Hebrew Union College in 1920 and was ordained rabbi to Temple Beth Israel in Waterbury, Ct. by Rabbi Stephen Wise. He left the rabbinate in 1926 to devote his time more fully to writing, and was thereafter much in demand on the national lecture circuit, where he was frequently teamed with Sinclair Lewis. Browne died a mysterious death in 1949 at his home in Santa Monica, California reportedly of "suicide by poison." Fine, in illustrated red cloth boards with gilt titles. Clean, crisp, bright, and sharp, binding tight, sound, and square. No ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. A handsome copy.
