Simms, as DAB describes him, "had a strong bent toward public affairs, a warm local patriotism, and a passion to defend South Carolina, with the whole South, against those who, he thought, maligned or misunderstood them...He did lose all his union sentiments, chiefly because he held that slavery was 'an especially and wisely devised institution of heaven'." Crackling to leather boards; corner tips showing; light internal foxing; a very good copy. BAL notes two printings of this first edition, no sequence established; our copy being BAL 18069 Printing B. "William Gilmore Simms (April 17, 1806 - June 11, 1870) was an American writer and politician from the American South who was a "staunch defender" of slavery.[1][2] A poet, novelist, and historian, his History of South Carolina served as the definitive textbook on state history for much of the 20th century. Literary scholars consider him a major force in antebellum Southern literature; in 1845 Edgar Allan Poe pronounced him the best novelist America had ever produced." - wiki.
