Very proper for these times, when men are butting, and pushing, and goring, and horning one another. Also an appendix concerning women and jealousy. FIRST EDITION 1661, small 8vo, approximately 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, LACKING FRONTISPIECE, SUPPLIED IN MODERN FACSIMILE, plus a blank leaf at beginning and end, and the leaf following the title page, Dedication? pages: [12], 1-84, followed by imprimatur leaf, catchword on *7v is a printer's error, pagination irregular but text collated and guaranteed complete, bound in modern full calf, blind ruled border and decorative panelling to covers, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. 2 lines written in Latin on colophon page, occasional minor mark to text or margins. A good copy with facsimile frontispiece as noted. Wing attributes authorship to George Rogers (1618-1697) a medical man who trained in Padua and then went into practice in London, eventually becoming the president of the College of Physicians. However in ODNB this is not listed amongst his works. In the Preface to this serio-comic work, published to coincide with celebrations for the restoration of the monarchy (and in an act of remarkable prescience about what would notoriously prove to be one of the major preoccupations of that new anti-puritan era), seeing 'the general verge of the people to merryment', the author expresses the hope that 'this piece of drollery' on the subject of cuckoldry might prove 'acceptable' to his readers. The first part runs to page 35, The Appendix on Women and Jealousy is larger occupying pages 37 to 84. ESTC R209943 list 2 copies in UK libraries and 6 in USA; G. Thomason, Catalogue of the Pamphlets, Books Relating to the Civil War, Volume 2, page 349, E. 1808, (3.). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More

Description:
This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
