Description:
A First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1951. The author's scarce second book. The Book is in near Fine condition. The boards are clean with just some light fading and pushing to the spine ends. There is some mild toning to the text block with light offsetting of the end-papers. The book is tight, clean and free from markings and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition. It bears the correct price of 10s 6d. It has some very minor edge-wear with associated creasing and rubbing to the tips of the spine. The spine is slightly toned but this does not detract from the pictorial wrap around design. The rear panel has mild age related markings but less so than usually encountered. The wonderful period wrapper artwork is by the renowned artist John Minton and looks stunning in the Brodart protective cover. John Minton was commissioned to design the wrappers for both of Camberton's books. The book has been warmly inscribed and signed by the author on the upper front…

The First UK printing published by Heinemann, London in 1949. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Original publisher's blue cloth with gilt titling and decorations to the spine and front cover. Some very light markings to the cloth with some tiny fading at the corner tips. The crimson top-stain remains vibrant. Free from inscriptions. Mild toning to the text-block. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Correctly priced at '9s 6d NET' to the lower front flap. Mild edge-wear at the spine ends with a little loss and rubbing at the upper spine end but not involving any lettering. Some rubbing to the folds with a little light creasing and small closed tears in places. No fading of colouring to the spine. The wraparound wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The author's first book and one of the most acclaimed childrens novels of the last century. Memorably filmed in 2003, directed by Tim Fywell and starring Romola Garai, Bill Nighy and Rose Byrne. The wrapper artwork and B/W Illustrations are by Ruth Steed from sketches by the author. A very elusive title to find in such collectible condition. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
