About This Item
216, VII pp. Cyrillic-language reference volume on iconography of the Virgin Mary in Greek and Russian church art and its connection to early Italian Renaissance painting, by the well-known Russian icon scholar. Scholarly notes with bibliographic information. Illustrated profusely throughout with close to 150 text illustrations, primarily reproductions from photographs. Handwritten ink notation "Baron de Baye" to title page and a second ink notation to secondary title page. 4to. Cloth-backed marbled boards, black morocco label with gilt title to spine. Some slight soiling and rubbing, especially to extremities. St. Petersburg (Tovariscestvo R. Golike i A. Vil'borg) 1911. Kondakov was a Russian historian and a specialist in Byzantine and Russian art and Russian Orthodox culture. He created his own methodology for studying Russian icons, authoring a book simply titled "The Russian Icon", which he intended to be the definitive work on the subject. This book was the result of decades of scholarly research as well as a familiarity with icon painting as it was still practiced in late Imperial Russia. When the book was finally published, two years after Kondakov's death, it became the first monograph in English to be printed on the subject.
