About This Item

, , [first edition, 1985Clarendon Press, Oxford, first edition, 1985. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. xv,142 pp,lxxi pp of plates. From the blurb - "This book is a catalogue of illuminated manuscripts in Oxford College Libraries. Manuscripts are listed by school and date and the more important are illustrated. The collections began to be formed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and their purpose was as libraries of study books for the Fellows. Though many manuscripts were discarded in the sixteenth century, the collections continued to grow in the seventeenth century and later, and many of the most famous illuminated manuscripts were given then, such as the Life of St Cuthbert in University College, the Amesbury Psalter in All Souls, and the Bohun Psalter in Exeter College. Though these are, of course, well known, many other important manuscripts are here reproduced and made known for the first time.
