Cream-colored boards titled in red and brown with paste-down color illustration. In extraordinary condition. One of 175 copies with contents on light card leaves mounted on stubs. Illustrated by Lucien Boucher, painter, poster designer and illustrator. Two vignettes in text (one repeated on cover), double plate view of the prison camp and 21 plates, hand colored by the artist in somber and melancholy tones. The brief text and the images reflect the boredom and depression of prison life. The three men were prisoners of war in the Mersenburg camp in Saxony: the artist Lucien Boucher, the publisher Marcel Seheur and the author Mario Meunier, who was the secretary of Rodin and Isadora Duncan. Translated from the preface by Mac Orlan: beautiful, melancholy and malicious images. University of Chicago website: "large blocks of color, oblique angles, and abstracted forms that clearly owe something to Japanese prints and avant-garde practice."

Milan: P. e G. Vallardi, 1835. 35 copperplate prints bound in a hardcover folder, cover detached. Published by the Vallardi brothers of Milan, undated, but about 1835. The Vallardis continued the business founded in 1750 by their father, offering maps and prints, with Guiseppe carrying on after Pietro's death in 1819; the firm was renamed Antonio Vallardi around 1920 and continues, as part of a conglomerate, to produce guide & reference books. Some of the images are remakes, sometimes reversed, of prints engraved by Peregrinus de Colle and Francesco Pedro, many from paintings by Venetian painter Francesco Maggiotto (1738-1805) (mostly cited on the prints as Maiotto or Magiotto), originally published by Cavalli of Venice some 30-40 years earlier. Often they illustrate quotes from Virgil, Horace, & Voltaire. Includes I Destini Messi Alla Sorte [card players]; La Lettura Della Bibia [father reading to bored family, child playing with small dog]; L'Infanzia Dei Contadini [Dionysian…

Set of 36 handcoloured lithographs after satirical illustrations by Jean-Gabriel Scheffer from What one says and what one thinks, Little Scenes of the World. An album of rare lithographs that depict comical scenes of daily life in Paris during the reign of King Charles X, in the Restoration era. Women in the voluminous puff-sleeved dresses and bonnets of the time, the men in elegant jackets and pants, lounging in restaurants, cafes, libraries, gardens and galleries. With title page and 36 hand-coloured plates lithographed and printed by Gihaut Frères in Paris (last six plates printed by Charles Tilt, London). These delightful satirical scenes mock the hypocrisies and annoyances of bourgeois society, in the same way as Thomas Rowlandson depicted the Miseries of Human Life in Regency England. The captions show what the characters say on the left, and what they really think on the right. Women flatter Plain Janes and ugly men, men flatter ugly women, a widow takes a new lover before her husband's…

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
