A hardback suitable for rebinding.Originally bound in half green leather with marbled boards and gilt titles but back board and half spine missing, front board almost detached with some spine attached plus loose pieces present. Some foxing and the occasional acerbic comment in pencil in the margins otherwise no inscriptions. 280 pages, 15 illustrations on plates, appendix in Spanish .

London: Richard Bentley, 1867. ~Original full burgundy cloth over bevelled boards, ornate blindstamped frames to boards, gilt vignette of Burgos Cathedral to centre front board, gilt lettering and decor to spine. Mild fading to spine, to top front board, and to boards near spine. Hinges sound, endpapers uncracked at gutters. 'The Convent, Loughborough' blindstamped to front free endpaper, with dedicatory inscription to the convent in attractive early hand, dated 1868. Tiny amount of minor foxing, mainly to prelims. Frontis with tissue guard. 15 illustrations in total (inc. frontis). Minor cracking at gutters over inner hinges after first and sixth gatherings (pp. 1 & 96). Mary Elizabeth Herbert, Baroness Herbert of Lea (1822-1911), writer and philanthropist. Herbert assisted Florence Nightingale in her efforts to send women nurses to the front during the Crimean War.
