The legend created from the voyages of Lewis and Clark grew rapidly throughout the United States in the early 19th-century. Americans were craving access to the famed 'Journal' of Lewis and Clark, and publishers quickly provided. William Fisher collected and edited excerpts from the more established accounts (such as Gass) and published them in what has become known as the 'Apocrypha edition'.

Fisher's account, however, is no less desirable. It was the first work to include a dictionary of Indian languages, their use of plants as medicine, as well as detailed descriptions of the rivers and topography of the land they covered. It is worth noting that Sabin states Fisher includes material not published in other editions.
