About This Item

About this Item: Random House, New York, 1952. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Near fine first edition/first printing in a very good first state dust jacket. Book is near fine, tight and square. Internally the book is unmarked and possible unread. The first printing has an A.B. at the bottom of the copyright page. The dust jacket is G/VG with a large chip at the bottom front corner of the spine and a large chip at the top front corner of the spine and minor wear at the extremities. This iconic book in this state is extremely collectible. Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man is a monumental novel, one that can well be called an epic of modern "American Negro life-1952". It is a strange story , in which many extraordinary things happen , some of them shocking and brutal, some of them pitiful and touching yet always with elements of comedy and irony and burlesque that appear in unexpected places. Invisible Man is not only a great triumph of storytelling and characterization; it is a profound and uncompromising interpretation of the "Negro's" anomalous position in American society. Rare and collectible. Additional pictures on request.

Even though Ralph Ellison's novel Invisible Man is sometimes featured on banned books lists, it remains a consistent staple on many high school reading curriculums. In the novel, Ellison laments the feeling of hopelessness and invisibility that many Black men experience in the United States, and it elegantly explores the themes of racism and bigotry in ways that are both unsettling and accessible.
