Varanda, Jean. (died 1617) Johannis Varandaei Celeberrimorum Academiae Monspeliensis Medicorum Decani, & professoris Rgij, Practici primarij Physiolgia et Pathologia. Quibus accesserunt eiusdem Tractatvs Prognosticus: Item Tractaus De. Geneva: Apud Petrum & Jacobum Chouet, 1620. Octavo, 6.7 x 4.5 inches. Second edition. (:)8, A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa-Ddd8.

A small woodcut on the title page depicts a sick man lying prostrate, while a well dressed doctor stands to one side pointing at him. Little decorative head and tail pieces are printed throughout. This is a large, thick octavo. Its pages are clean throughout. It is bound in contemporary limp parchment which has wobbled and shrunk a bit, but still in good condition. There is separation and pulling away from the binding and end sewing is loose as well. Jean Varanda was a "French medical writer born in Nimes, graduated at Montpellier in 1587. He became professor of medicine at Montpellier, where he died in 1617." (Thomas). This medical handbook contains sections on tthe elements, the temperaments, parts of the body, the humors, the spirit, the faculties and functions, death and pathology, causes and symptoms of death, and indications of cure. The work is extensive in scope, detailing for instance, kidney and urinary difficulties. "Where first it must be remembered that urine should be obtained, in the turmoils of the kidneys and bladder, for prognoses and diagnoses in this important place, because just as material in the stomach or the liver, just as in such places it may begin suddenly to take its own final form: about which matter Hippocri. 2 prognost. warns us rather eloquently "...so that we may pay great attention to examining urine immediately."

"States new and redesigned Edition, Fourth Impression, 80p. Blue boards with black titling. Our book spine has skinned spot at the word "brown" from removal of scotch tape. Plot Summary: Who is he, the man in the brown suit? He says he is a doctor; but Anne Beddingfield, who witnesses the fatal accident at a London tube station, is quick to notice some curious features about him when he comes to the scene. Her investigation of the accident leads her into the thick of mystery. This novel is more than an ingenious puzzle: It is a gripping suspense story."
