London: Jones & Co., various dates (1820s) Travelling library of 52 volumes (of 53), of English poets and English prose (lacking Prior "The Poetical Works" vol. 1). The dates vary and the engraved titles frequently bear another date than the printed titles. Fuchsia-coloured crepe silk cloth with gilt-stamped navy-blue leather spine labels, 9.5cm x 5.75 cm, all edges gilt, frontispiece engraving with tissue guard. The volumes are preserved in the original red-brown roan case, which opened up is a fine bookcase, with glass doors, little brass levered closures, two shelves on each wing, and little ribbon tabs used to open each side. The top of the case shaped like the roof of an ancient temple, is lettered in gilt: "Jones' Diamond Poets and Classics." When closed, the case is intended to, and does, look like two quarto size leather-bound volumes. The sides are tooled in blind with triple fillets, with a leaf tool in the corners. Original book list mounted behind top left row. Rare. (See Spielmann 229). List of works can be supplied upon request.. Cloth in Book Case. Very Good. 48 mo. .

Printed on thick, heavy paper (Büttenpapier) with watermarks. With the bookplate of "Feuerbacher Heide" to inside of front board. Description:
Original exceedingly rare Russian Language 1st (Pirate) Edition of Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak. Meets all the issue points for the true 1st Edition - "Roman" to title page, 634 pages, publishers imprint in cyrillic, and 2 page introduction (lacking from later Russian editions). Unusually tight, bright, Very Good condition, with no inscriptions and only light toning to closed page edges. Several gatherings are unevenly browned as usual, due to differing paper stocks used in printing. Issued without a dust-jacket.The publication of the Russian text of Doctor Zhivago was attended by odd circumstances. It first appeared in a 'pirated' (or possibly semi-authorised) edition, a short time before Feltrinelli's official edition came out in Milan. The 'pirated' version, however, bore Feltrinelli's imprint and were produced by Mouton, the reputable firm of Dutch printers with whom he was negotiating, and to whom he had sent the manuscript. Declassified documents reveal that the CIA sought to embarrass the… Read More

v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
