A RARE book, and a cornerstone of East African exploration. Title continued, "and Journeys in Other Parts of Abyssinia in the Years 1839. 1840, 1841 and 1842 to which is prefixed a Geographical Memoir of Abyssinia and South-Eastern Africa, by James M'Queen, Esq. Grounded on the Missionaries' Journals, and the Expedition of the Pasha of Egypt Up the Nile". German Protestant Missionaries, Isenberg and Krapf provide details of the slave trade, East African towns visited, and the local tribes. Pages xxvii, 529 plus 4 page publisher ads. The maps have some color, and one has professional repairs on the verso, both now in fine condition. Original brown cloth with fine rebacking and original backstrip laid down on the spine, slight wear at the corners and new endpapers. Protected in a clear, mylar dustjacket. Inside, clean and tight, hint of foxing only on the last few pages, Bowdoin College library on the back of the maps. (see Pankhurst 22., Hess-Coger 717).
