Macmillan and co. London. 1894 + 95. FIRST EDITIONS. Two volumes. 8vo. With illustrations by J. L. Kipling, W. H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. A remarkably clean and fresh set with absolutely no foxing or marking in either volume, they book look unread. Original blue cloth with gilt illustrations to front boards and spines, which are also lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. No cracking or splitting of the inner hinges, a problem common with these titles. Some very minor rubbing to the extremities of the cloth bindings, mainly on The Jungle Book, but still overall a very near fine, tight and fresh set of these classic books. A superior set and a rare survivor in such lovely condition.

San Francisco: Elder & Shepard, 1902. Wraps. Orig. decorated wrappers, cover design in dark and light blue, white and yellow on green paper. Near fine. 50 pages. 23.5 x 16 cm. 8 black and white full-page illustrations, decorative page borders. A smoking-themed parody spurred undoubtedly in part by the proliferation of fine press and arts and crafts editions of the Rubaiyat. The editor here concludes the burning need was not more translators, but for more Omars to translate, thus the son of Omar lying undiscovered in the wilds of Borneo sings the praises of tobacco over alcohol. Unobtrusive owner name on cover.
