About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1936. First Edition. More than likely this copy was inscribed during the filming of 'Nobody Lives Forever' in 1946, a film directed by Negulesco and based on a book and screenplay by Burnett. A novel about an Ohio Governor named Read Cole, whose initial concerns for real issues become subsumed by political forces as he rises to the top of the heap. An important cautionary tale on the dangers of the political machine, preceding Robert Penn Warren's 'All The King's Men' by nealy a decade. A scarce, early Burnett title, and a tremendous association. First Printing. Octavo; green cloth, with titles stamped in black and orange on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 292pp. Inscribed by Burnett opposite the title page to director Jean Negulesco: "For Jean Negulesco - a good director and a good guy. W.R. Burnett." Previous owner's initials discreetly blind-stamped on preliminary and terminal pages, else Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped, lightly rubbed, with some shallow chipping to extremities, a bit of the usual light discoloration to spine, and partial separation to front flap fold; Very Good.
