Bound collection of issues No. 1 to 60 from the 27th year of the magazine, from 5 January to 31 October 1823. Most women's fashion plates by the famous illustrator Louis Marie Lante, 1789-1871.Plates numbered 2121 to 2194, missing 2160-2162, 2170, 2191-2193, several out of order, but a total of 64 fine fashion plates. La Mesangere (1761-1831) was author, journalist and editor, and published the Journal from 1797 to 1839, covering the post-Revolutionary Directory era through the Napoleonic Empire and the Bourbon Restoration. Brown leather spine, black leather labels with gilt decoration, boards with brown marble paper. Condition: Binding scuffed, front hinge weak, plates slightly browned and spotting with usual crease down the centre (where the magazine was folded before binding).

Very good copy of William Alexander's translation of Octavian Dalvimart's depiction of the costumes of the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century. A complete set of these charming costume plates showing different ranks of courtiers and servants to the Sultan, enslaved women Sultanas, Odalisks and Eunuchs of the Seraglio or Harem, musicians and dancing girls of Constantinople, whirling dervishes, Spahi and Janissaries, officers and soldiers, Bedouin Arabs, Armenian, Tartar and Jewish men, etc.Title page, vi, and 120 unnumbered pages (60 hand-coloured engraved plates and 60 text pages).First published in 1802, and reissued by various publishers several times until the 1830s. A rare suite of all 30 plates in both hand-coloured and uncoloured states.Total of 91 etchings: 1 set of 30 hand-coloured plates and 2 sets of 30 uncoloured plates, plus portrait of Sardou.The etchings by A. Guillaumot Fils (Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr.) were made from theatrical costume designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner for productions of the comic opera Les Merveilleuses (The Lady Dandies) (1873) by Sardou. The costumes were based on contemporary prints from the Revolutionary era.
Suites of the second edition with 30 etched plates, following the first with only 20 plates in 1874. The Merveilleuses is set in Revolutionary France during the period of the Directoire, 1789-1804, where Royalist Parisian society is led by the Incroyables and Muscadins, ridiculous fops and dandies, and Merveilleuses, outrageous women wearing classical Roman- and Greek-inspired robes in see-through fabrics.
