- Hardcover
Unique edition of Sir Walter Scott's most famous poem, bound in full dice/checkered leather as "Scott's Works" & "Lady of the Lake" in hand-stamped gilt on spine with hand-tooled gilt decorations to spine, covers and interior boards. Marbled end papers with matching marbled page edges and illustrated with engravings from Rich Westall. This copy contains two title pages, the first contains an illustrated lake scene, is dated 1811 and noted as "illustrated with engravings" and published by John Sharper, Picadilly (London). The second title page is not illustrated, dated 1810, and states "Sixth Edition" with the standard "printed for" by James Ballantyne and Co. It appears that this edition was specially bound and presented to Ferdinand M McVeagh, as his armored bookplate is pasted to front interior marbled board. Many engravings still contain tissue-guard, with only light spotting/foxing, mainly on pages directly before/after engravings. Shelf wear, light rub marks to front/rear boards and mild corner bumping, while the pages are clean and unmarked, binding is remarkably solid and firm, boards/hinges are tight and firm. A sound, solid, hand-tooled leather bound copy, complete with provenance and bookplate from prominent historical figure and bibliophile. We provide original pictures of all items - Please review these pictures prior to purchase, as the item pictured will be the exact item of which you will receive. Description:
Brown leather binding with maroon title plates, gilt decoration and lettering on the spine. Two volumes.Translated by Samuel Clark. Greek and Latin. Good clean examples of bookmaker's craft. Homer was the reputed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two epic poems that are the foundational works of ancient Greek literature. He is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential writers of all time. The Iliad is set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy by a coalition of Mycenaean Greek kingdoms. It focuses on a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles lasting a few weeks during the last year of the war. The Odyssey focuses on the ten-year journey home of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, after the fall of Troy. Many accounts of Homer's life circulated in classical antiquity, the most widespread being that he was a blind bard from Ionia, a region of central coastal Anatolia in present-day Turkey. Modern scholars consider these accounts legendary. The Homeric… Read More
