Description:
Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated. 4to. Original green cloth, paper label on cover, rebacked. 126 William Street, New York (1898). First Edition. Limited to 125 numbered copies. This is copy # 52. Signed by Stephen Crane after his story, The Wise Men. Also signed by 5 of the 6 other contributors: John Langdon Heaton, Irving Bacheller, Post Wheeler, Charles Gaines and Charles Lewis. Cranes story is the first of 7 pieces and it occupies more than half the volume. It was once believed that he signed only 10 to 15 copies, but that number now seems low. It is safe to say he did not signed all copies and the number he did sign is in question. Crane died at age 28, and his signature is exceedingly rare. Scuffing to the front and back covers; paper label soiled; front endpaper slightly wrinkled; some foxing to a few of the preliminary pages; o/w very nice. Uncut; partially unopened. Scarce

Chicago: R. R. Donnelly and Sons (The Lakeside Press), 1903. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 117 volumes of the Lakeside Classics - complete run of green, red, blue, brown and mint green series, 1903 - 2019. Books in the first series (1903 - 1927) bear the same bookplate on the pastedown in all volumes. All the volumes show very modest, uniform wear largely at spine ends. The initial series was collected by a Chicago attorney, identified by his bookplate. The spine of Inaugural Addresses has a `1 tear in cloth over spine tip that has been re-sealed. The red series (1928 - 1952) is in very good or better condition, save for varied levels of very slight fading to some spines. 13 of the volumes have no bookplates or PONs; 12 have the same bookplate for the original collector of the first series. Three of the volumes have the Donnelley business card with compliments of the season of Herbert P. Zimmermann, Donnelley Vice President. The copy of Wau-Bun (1932) has the calling card of publisher Thomas Elliott Donnelley affixed to the pastedown with the handwritten inscription for brief interludes between other briefs (referring to the legal occupation of the collector). One volume, The True Picture of Emigration (1936) has a damp stain that has slightly wrinkled the front signatures of the book. Mackenzies Voyage (1931) has another previous owner signature on the ffe (besides this collectors bookplate) on the pastedown. The blue series (1953 - 1977) is in fine/ almost as new condition all over, apparently unread/unused, no bookplates of any kind or PONs. Three of the volumes have the business card of C. Bouton McDougal with compliments of the season. The brown series (1978 - 2002) and the last series (2003 -2019) are as new, apparently unread/unused.

(Sabin 118) A reissue of the 1588 edition.Jose de Acosta (September/October 1539 - February 15, 1600), was a Spanish 16th-century Jesuit missionary and naturalist in Latin America. Born at Medina del Campo in Spain, he became a novice in the Society of Jesus at the age of thirteen at the place of his birth. Four of his brothers successively joined the same order. Before leaving Spain, he was lecturer in theology at Ocana, and in April 1569, was sent to Lima, Peru, where the Jesuits had been established in the proceeding year. At Lima, Acosta again occupied the chair of theology; his fame as an orator had preceded him. In 1571 he went to Cuzco as a visitor of the college of the Jesuits then recently founded. xviii+443 pages with folding copper-engraved map. Octavo (8¼" x 5"), early half calf-backed boards, morocco lettering piece. Translated by A.J.N. Lallemant. (Graff 1519; Howes G77; Wagner-Camp 6:3; Wheat Transmississippi 300.) First French Edition.First publication in a foreign language of any detailed information of the Lewis and Clark expedition, of especial interest to the French, since it was through lands they had so recently laid claim to. Perhaps more notable, however, is the presence of the map by J.B. Tardieu, "Carte Pour servir au Voyage des Capes. Lewis et Clarke..." which seems to be the first one published that mentions Lewis and Clark and locates parts of their route. It measures (9½x7¾"). Wheat notes that "Tardieu had no Lewis and Clark map to assist him, but he apparently had at hand Meriwether Lewis's brief letter-report to Jefferson, and he did his best to locate on his map at least a few of the Expedition's points of geographic interest. His available topography, based as it… Read More

"...Lakeside Classics is a series started in 1903 that reprinted neglected classic works. Thomas E. Donnelley, then president of the company, was impressed by a set of seven razors presented to him by one of the company's suppliers, and wanted to create a gift that would similarly represent his own company's product and could not be purchased on the open market. The company did not sell the books to the public, but gave each of the company employees a copy at Christmas, making the series valued collectors items.
