About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 vol. Large 8vo. [5], vi-xvi, [1], 2-441, [5]; [3], vi-xvi, [1], 2-474, [2] pp. Bound in navy cloth with gold lettering and decorations in gold and black on the boards and the spines. Each volume illustrated by a frontispiece, 235 illustrations total with a folding map in the rear pocket of volume 1. Du Chaillu was a French-American zoologist and anthropologist, best-known for providing definitive scientific evidence of the existence of gorillas and for confirming the existence of an African pygmy tribe. These accomplishments brought Du Chaillu great fame, and he published numerous popular books and was a favorite on the lecture circuit during the mid-19th century. Du Chaillu's interests eventually shifted from Africa to Northern Europe, and the present book was the result of his extensive travels in Scandanavia. A very attractive set. Near Fine with a few traces of wear to the extremities, the gilt is bright and the cloth is clean and unfaded.
