San Francisco: The Colt Press, 1946. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Dean, Mallette. One of 500 copies, octavo size, 32 pp., inscribed by both Jane Grabhorn and by Mallette Dean. First edition with Mallette Dean illustrations, inscribed by Jane Grabhorn "with love to Sherwood" [Grover], July 1946, also inscribed by Mallette Dean, "I'll bear down on the fine lines here after Bill" - Mallette. Number five of the Colt Press Series of California Classics. The letter was first printed in the "Weekly Mercury", London, 1875, and is here reprinted from the "Huntington Library Quarterly", October 1939, with an introduction by Bradford A. Booth. A modification of Mallette Dean's first Colt Press mark appears, printed in brown, in the colophon of this book, which was printed by the Grabhorn Press.
___DESCRIPTION: Bound in quarter dark-green cloth and pink patterned paper boards, backstrip lettered and ruled in pink, plain endpapers, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title-page and frontis with decorative border, four woodcut illustrations by Mallette Dean including frontispiece in various single colors; octavo size (8.75" by 5.75"), pagination: [i-v] vi-viii [ix-x] [1-3] 4-32 [1 colophon], limited edition of 500 copies, unnumbered, inscribed by Jane Grabhorn and Mallette Dean.
___CONDITION: Overall near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with absolutely no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings (except inscriptions referred to above); the paper boards with faint toning at the edges and a shallow dent to upper board (approx. 3 mm long), else fine.
