About This Item

2 vols. (viii, 264, viii, 266 pp.) 8vo (9 ¼ x 6) period calf & cloth, spines decorated in gilt, morocco lettering pieces. Illustrated with 309 engravings on 177 plates, and three engraved maps. With armorial bookplate. Some rubbing to spine & extremities. Top 1” of front cover of volume II faded. A few fox marks within, otherwise very good, and internally near fine. Catlin (1796-1872) was considered one of the most influential artists and anthropologists of the 19th century when it came to the American Indian. His interest in the subject may have begun with listening to tales from his mother who was captured by Indians as a child. After years of painting portraits of the well-to-do in Washington, Catlin set out west to pursue his real interest. He visited 48 Indian Tribes on his tour of the West, and executed some 600 paintings. The engravings in this work were taken from the original paintings, and were supervised by Catlin himself. The text and illustrations portray all aspects of Indian life, including buffalo hunting, games, rituals and village life.
