1698 History of the BIBLE Illustrated de Sacy Famous Royamond Bible Fontaine

Nicolas Fontaine was a relatively unknown French theologian from the 17th-century. He closely associated himself with Lemaistre de Sacy and was subsequently arrested for heresy as a Jansenist with de Sacy. Fontaine wrote several important works, including a history of the Bible; however, this work has often been attributed to de Sacy because of the closeness the two shared. Because the work was published under the name 'Royaumont's Bible', the attribution was not always clear.

This book features over 250 impressive copper engravings of famous Bible scenes – an incredible collection of illustrations!

This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

Bound in later full leather by Otto Mintzlaff, gilt decorated, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Mintzlaff's stamp is on the front pastedown, later small ink presentation on the front fly leaf. The front joint is split, small mended tear at the crown, two preliminary "Avertissement" text pages are soiled, the upper right corner and fore-edge of the second Avertissement leaf is partially damaged, and a few short tears to the upper right corner and margin of about three other leaves, else very good. The many fine copperplate engravings throughout the text are bright and clean. A scarce, early folio edition of Fontaine's classic retelling of the Scripture in prose for children. Commonly known by his pseudonym as the *Bible of Royaumont*, this copy is also notable for the high artistic quality of its engravings.

Binding is square, tight and clean save for a stray mark on reverse. Red top stain. Internals clean except for faint marginal spotting/staining on pp.136-37. Old Weiser booklabel on front pastedown. Unclipped wrapper has minor wrinkling/ small creases (it is a very thin gold foil paper jacket) plus some edgewear; else Fine. Fifty-seven illustrations on b/w plates interspersed throughout text; again, as mentioned elsewhere on this space; images perhaps those not commonly seen re-printed ad nauseum.
