London; 1835-1836: For Henry Colburn. First Edition. Octavo. First Colburn edition. Four volumes in eight consisting of the original 24 weekly parts, illustrated with eight frontispieces, seventeen engravings, two large folding maps, and one folding plan and tissue guards. There is a notice to the subscribers mentioning the fact that while there is a total of 20 proposed plates, the remaining three volumes will contain 5 more plates, for a total of 25 plates. An important work by the Count Las Cases who followed Napoleon into exile at St. Helena. For 18 months he recorded his conversations with Napoleon on his principles of warfare, his identification of the French Revolution with the Empire, his political philosophy, and his sentiments on religion and philosophy. A letter of complaint about Napoleon's treatment led to Las Cases' deportation and to the seizure of his manuscript by the British government. Forbidden to enter England, he traveled in Germany and Belgium until he was allowed to return to France after the death of Napoleon in 1822. Las Cases represents the 17th military generation of his family, which began with the reign of Louis VIII in 1223. During the time between the reign of Louis VIII and Napoleon's exile in 1815, the Las Cases family was intimately involved in the majority of the European conflicts that occurred, being closely tied to the monarchy and writing their biographies including that of Columbus.. (Ency. Britannica) All front and rear wrappers are bound in the rear of each volume with one wrapper used as title pages within the second parts. All bound in ¾ blue morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, raised bands with compartments lettered and embellished with gilt, top edges gilt. Some minor chipping to heads, darkening to edges, some minor cosmetic color touch ups added. Interior clean and bright without tears, foxing, previous owner's names or bookplates. A handsome set and quit scarce. The last set sold at auction in 2006. OCLC records two holding of only eight parts in four volumes.

1682 1ed Whitlocke Memorials of England Civil War Charles I Cromwell FOLIO RARE

Bulstrode Whitlocke's "Memorials of the English Affairs" is a rare, late 17th-century account of the political events that occurred in England during the reigns of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II. The title itself claims that to book includes military and civil interests, as well as secrets of the royal cabinet; however, this book is also a supreme source on the 'Puritan Revolution' or English Civil War.
Found within its contents are detailed descriptions of the events leading up to, during, and after the English Civil Wars, all from the Parliamentary perspective. Recorded are various speeches and events surrounding the conflict between Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and the English government. Among these events include a record of the trial and execution of Charles I, the establishment of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector, and the 1660 restoration of the monarchy in Charles II.

1837 Naval History Britain War of 1812 British NAVY Ships WARS 6v HMS Spartan

William James was a 19th-century British naval historian who wrote numerous military history texts. One of his best works was 'The Naval History of Great Britain' which was written in response to many of the perspectives on the War of 1812. James was highly critical of British Captain Edward Brenton, who wrote a history of British naval warfare that seemed to be both unreliable and heavily biased.
This impressive, six-volume set includes numerous diagrams of the formations of British naval fleets.
