Chapman & Hall, 193 Piccadilly. Highly Collectible. Whilst not dated, it is part of the Dickens series we have in stock which is dated 1879; the same publisher, the same printer, the same bindings, the same series. When this series was released Chapman and Hall only dated alternate volumes. Gold gilt etching & gilt titles to spine, with five raised bands. Quarter bound in red leather & marbled boards, with marbled endpapers & marbling to all edges. The printer Virtue & Co printed many of the early Dickens editions. Vol 1, 'Poverty', 456 pp, with 16 illustrations; Vol 2, 'Riches', 427 pp, also 16 illustrations. A beautiful 2 volume set with minimal wear.

London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1877. Two volume set with purple cloth, black and gold printing on front covers, gold on spine, bevelled edges on covers, brown end papers. Square solid copies with color fading of cloth on spines and along spines of both volumes. Light fading around edges of covers, a thin light stain along right side of front cover of volumetwo, otherwise all covers show light wear. Top edges of both books are dusty. Small pieces of cheap paper were used to mark about five places in volume 2, and the papers left small stains near the top of the page near the center gutter. A small amount of pencil writing on the back of the front free end paper of volume one, otherwise the interiors of both volumes are clean and unmarked.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good- Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

FIRST EDITION; octavo, two volumes complete, viii+380+viii+376pp. In attractive Victorian black half leather over purple cloth boards, five raised spine bands, red and green gilt-lettered leather title labels in second and fourth compartments, other compartments richly gilt, binding with only the lightest of wear and very light fading to cloth boards. With marbled page edges and matching original marbled endpapers. Occasional unobtrusive light stains and browning (especially to outer margins of plates well clear of printed images) but overall a clean copy free from foxing and with full complement of 46 engraved plates (including engraved frontispiece to each volume) and numerous in-text illustrations. Bound up from original parts with small stab holes to inner margins. A very attractive set in first edition.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.

The Valjean Edition. 3/4 leather bindings with marbled boards. Spines have chips and some are loose – very fragile. Covers also have chips, bumps, and edge wear. Interior of books have frontispieces with printed tissue guards.
Pages in all of the volumes are waved or cockled. Previous owner's name is in front of books.
Poor condition that will need expert book restoration.
