Moscow: Foreign Languages Publishing House, circa 1957-1970. English Translation. Pictorial Boards. Good. N.M. Kochergin. Early edition of this wonderful fairy tale in verse. Translated from the Russian by Loiis Zellikoff. Designed by Yiri Kapylov and beautifully ilustrated by N.M. Kochergin. Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov ( 1815-1869) was born in the village of Bezrukovo and later studied philosophy at St Peterburg University, where he wrote his masterpiece fairy tale 'The Humpbacked Horse'. The little horse helps Ivan, a peasant's son, carry out many unreasonable demands made by the Tsar. During his adventures Ivan gets the magic Firebird for the Tsar, keeps his magic horse and finds his love (Princess Elena the Beautiful), and he finally lives happily for many years after. In the mid-nineteenth century censors banned the complete story for more than twenty years because it made the Tsar seem foolish. It was intended to be a satire on the absurdities of Russian feudal and bureaucratic life of the time. Now it is just considered a classical fairy tale.Matt illustrated boards, red cloth spine with gilt lettering and design.
