About This Item

London: Heinemann, [1977]., 1977. First edition. First English text edition. Originally published in Germany as Kleine Geschichten fur Weiberfeinde in a translation by W. E. Richartz. Inscribed by the author on the half title page: "For -- -- (an evil book) Patricia Highsmith, 22 Oct. 1981, New York." Former owner's neat bookplate on the front pastedown sheet, else a fine, bright copy in dust jacket. Seventeen ironical short stories that are short and each with a black-humored portrait of a particular woman that is decorated with the generic awfulness of the female sex. There are women who destroy their men and women who destroy themselves; girls who notch up their conquests and then go too far morally or geographically and are never seen again; a wife who for years seemed safely infertile and then had seventeen children in rapid succession. All these funny and provocative stories are marked by the author's individual view of people and society and her gift for turning the bizarre extremes of human behavior into sophisticated entertainment. Recommended. An exceptional copy and rare signed or inscribed as the author rarely signed copies of her books.
