London: The Folio Society, 2007. [Spy novel] FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION in book-form, second printing, bibliographer's copy. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.xvi; 252 [2], with inserted colour frontispiece and other illustrations. Bound in pictorial cloth of graduating russet and terracotta shades, blocked in black, silver and gilt with a shark and a diver to the front cover and a coral reef with gold coins to the rear cover. Dark brown endpapers, all edges trimmed, with burgundy and white striped embroidered head and tail bands. Housed in a plain brown card slip-case. A fine copy (light wear to outer case). Jon Gilbert's copy, with his pencilled ownership to half title. This elegant hardback edition features an original introduction from the acclaimed thriller writer Ken Follett, and seven full-page colour plate illustrations by Lyndon Hayes. Publisher's black vinyl-style cloth-covered boards, lettered in gilt to the spine, in pictorial dust-jacket illustrated by Jerome Kuhl, priced at $3.95. A used, ex-library copy with expected stamps, library pocket at rear, label/bookplate to f.e.p., edges toned, jacket is well preserved. A full-price hardback reissue, published 17th January 1966. These editions appeared briefly in the mid 1960s and were easily outsold by the uniform Book Club editions. Second American Edition. This copy is from the comprehensive bibliographical archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his loose bookplate. Ex-library copy with expected institutional markings, declassification stamp, remnants of loans label to f.e.p. All text leaves present although lacking rear endpaper. Binding frayed at crown. A reading copy/collection filler which is presentable on the shelf.
