New York: William Morrow and Co., 1953. [6], 178, [1] pages. Original maroon cloth, spine stamped in yellow. Endpaper maps. [20.8 cm.] Near fine in very good dust jacket. Neat name on blank upper margin of front free endpaper (not affecting map), very slightly cocked, else an excellent copy. Jacket shows a little wear to extremities; several short and mostly closed tears; and some minor rubbing and soil. FIRST EDITION. A noteworthy account of the quest for the legendary lost mine in the Superstition Mountains. The author discusses various stories related to the origin and location of the Lost Dutchman, as well as his own attempts to find the mine. Ely searched for many years in partnership with James E. Bark, a prominent cattleman who owned a ranch in the vicinity. Sims Ely (1862-1954) was the publisher and editor of the Arizona Republican; secretary to Joseph Henry Kibbey, governor of Arizona Territory (1905-1909); a banker; and the manager of Boulder City, the town constructed by the government to house the workers who built Hoover Dam (1931-1941). This was his first and only book.

When setting out from Astoria, OR in a cheap canvas tent, the intrepid travelers quickly discovered that it offered not protection from either rain, or mosquito’s so they ordered a Peerless Auto Tent in Portland, and the durable canvas tent proved essential, including surviving golf ball sized hail stones in South Dakota.
