A scarce complete run in three issues of the short-lived artistic and literary journal, created during the war and edited by painter Georges Hugnet with assistance from Maurice de Becque, containing prose and poetry contributions from major figures from Surrealism and associated movements including Paul Eluard, Marcel Duchamp, Tristan Tzara, Salvador Dali, Nicolas Gogol, Francis Picabia, Pierre Reverdy, Michel Manoll, and many others, with illustrated vignettes and cover design by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Hans Arp, René Magritte, Marc Chagall, Many Ray, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró. A few scattered illustrations. Large 4to. (24.5 x 32.5 cm). Original stapled wrpps. Some minor soiling and browning to no. 2, no. 3 with some foxing and minor staining, overall very good. Paris (Éditions Cahiers d'Art) 1939-1940. Georges Hugnet was a French graphic artist, poet, writer, art historian, designer, and critic, as well as a major figure of the Dada and Surrealist movements. This collection of L''Usage de la Parole is a rare complete run; although as of April 2020, WorldCat locates scattered holdings in a handful of North American institutions, most appear to be incomplete or even single issues.
