About This Item
Madrid: Lithography: Eusebio Fernandez. Printer: Sucesor de Regino Velasco. , 1924. Wraps. Thin cord tie. . Very Good. Wonderful caricatures of the Spanish leisure class done in the spirit of Sem. Scarce -- no copies found on OCLC First Search. Folio, 36 by 25.5 cm. Unpaginated, 56 pages, plus wrap covers. Subjects of fun include court regalia and costume, activities such as billiards, dancing, equestrian sports, theater and opera going, and overarching everything, the effete attitudes, the snobbish airs, the posturing and pretensions of the elite. All the caricatures are rendered in rich color. There are four double paged color plates, five single page color plates, and four full page advertisements in color, one of whose illustration is mounted, the others being done directly on the page. This is in addition to the color illustration on the front cover and the color ad on the rear. There are 21 pages devoted to ads in total, predominated by ultra-luxury brands such as Rolls Royce, thus evidence that the target audience for this publication was the sector of society it was lampooning. (Advertisers include Studebaker, Renault, Alpha-Romeo [sic], Buick, Minton China, as well as several banks, jewelers and obviously high-end furniture stores.) The ads also often have striking graphics and real beauty, and they contribute significantly to the visual pleasure of the publication. There is also an abundance of caricatures rendered virtually always in color interspersed throughout the 20 or so pages of text. Condition: wraps with yapp edges and this numerous short closed tears, virtually inevitable with the limp card that constitutes the wraps. Moderate soiling of the cover. Corner crease, now flattened, and lightly repeated with interior leaves. Age toning of the leaves.
