Text block is soundly sewn with protective cardboard covers but has never been formally bound. Volume 2 of 5 volume set. (Volumes 1-4 are text; volume 5 is index and 39 plates.) This volume is complete as issued with all blanks. Collates: i-vii, 1-561, [2]. Adams was scientific instrument maker to George III. Adams is important in the history of the progress of science as he strongly advocated experimental science. I have provided a page from his lecture: "On The Method of Reasoning in Natural Philosophy" (p. 98 this volume) describing his commitment to experimental science. I cannot overstate the importance of this shift in scientific thinking - relying on experimental data instead of the wisdom of the ancients. Contemporary full calf with modern tissue joint repair; gilt-tooled decoration on spine. This volume includes lectures on optics, vision, telescopies and miscroscopes, areas of the author's specialization. The 10 plates all illustrate aspects of optics. In Very Good- Condition: lacking original spine label; tissue repair of joints and hinges; faint dampstain along lower edge of a few plates; plate IV has a separation of 2 cm. from upper edge along a fold, and plate X one of 3 cm.; some foxing on plates; otherwise, clean and tight.

Hardcover bound in original green cloth with cover designs in black and with titles in gilt. The binding is worn but sound. Some splitting to the cloth at the right corner of the headcap on the front hinge. The binding is a bit dusty and soiled from handling. Inner hinges secure, and the text block is sound. Endpapers foxed, and the title and frontis are quite foxed. The text is generally clean. SIGNED at the top of the title page, "Mary F. Thomas." This appears to be Mary F. Thomas (1818-1888) the American physician, abolitionist, and Women's Rights leader. She would doubtless have held interest in Caroline Herschel (1750-1848), the German astronomer who discovered several comets. She was also the sister of William Herschel, with whom she worked. A scarce book with a nice association.
