The 406 pages remain in fresh, clean condition and are tightly bound. Discreet ownership inscription to front paste down otherwise interior of book is very clean. Book sits solid and square with all hinges strong. Housed in the distinctive dustwrapper with publishers printed price intact on front inside flap. Light wear, creasing and signs of handling mainly to head and heel of spine otherwise dustwrapper is in very good condition. Colours remain fresh and vibrant with no fading. London: Chatto & Windus, 1939 first British issue in two toned green and grey cloth boards, white and green titling to the spine, bottom page edges untrimmed, sewn not cased, no inscriptions, faint scattered foxing to the closed edges, lower board has minor damp to the bottom corner with some mild bubbling of the cloth and faint marking to the spine corner of the rear few text pages, but with some darker marking to the end papers, unclipped dust wrapper has some short edge tears and some light chipping to spine ends, there is some damp marking but mainly to the reverse of the DW, some age browing visible to the yellow parts of the wrapper, the green front and spine are tidy but with some edge and corner rubbing, first edition issued in only 2000 copies, RARE in the dust wrapper, 315pp. Bank deposit as payment for this item please.. London: Jonathan Cape, 1973 SCARCE title, price clipped DW under plastic sleeve, minor chipping to spine ends, short tear along the fold of at the bottom of the lower ( rear) joint, laminated illustrated upper layer of the DW has a surface split with minor chipping at the head of the upper joint, book top edge is slightly dusty, and very slight foixing to closed fore edge, top 10mm of fep clipped off, and a small area towards the corner of the half title has been neatly trimmed off as well ( about 5mm deep), otherwise book and wrapper are tidy. Each volume has an engraved frontispiece with tissue guard and a publisher's catalog printed on yellow paper at the front and back, also a general index in the last volume. Some spotting to the pages, offsetting to the endpapers, a small snag on the back hinge of vol. 5, and neat 2 line owner stamps in each volume. A bright, attractive set which presents well.
