About This Item

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1896. A sound, tight copy of a notoriously fragile book, with some light fading to the spine lettering and decorated panel on front cover, stain at foot of spine, some light wear at extremities. 8vo. xx, [2], 698 pages. 46 plates and 16 maps. Original blue decorated cloth. First edition of Confederate Lieutenant General James Longstreet's memoirs. After war, Longstreet - known as 'War Horse," "Bull Dog," and "Bull of the Woods" - was hailed as both a Confederate hero and a brutish scoundrel, a dutiful soldier who drank and gambled. In these memoirs, Longstreet reveals his insights about the Civil War, focusing on battle strategies, war accounts, and opinions regarding other officers. It is considered an important first-hand account of the Confederate side of the war, and is scarcely found in fine condition due to its bulk and tendency towards heavy wear from reading.
