Hardcover. 12mo; Fair+/no DJ; Hardcover w/out DJ, rebound; Spine black with gold print; Boards in black cloth, slight wear to spine caps, slight shelfwear; Text block has cracked front hinge, spine break at page 622, tanning to endpapers, mild age-toning to paper, very slight foxing, tears to map frontispiece, a check against The Society of Iconophiles "Index" (1906) showed that the numerous illustrations, some on folded plates, (maps, chromolithographs, engravings, facsimiles, etc.) are mostly present (absent are illustrations at pages 120 and 352); Spine title: Manual of the Common Council, City of New York, 1863; xii, 852 pages, illustrated (some color). New York: D. T. Valentine, 1863. First edition. Hardcover. Fair. 1863 edition of this popular history of New York City. Hardcover, 8vo., rebound in early 20th-century 1/2 leather with the name of the former owner, American author and railroad enthusiast Edward Hungerford, in gilt on the front board. The original cloth spine and front cover are mounted to rear blanks. 852 pp. Color title page. Illustrated throughout, including many fold-out maps and color plates. Fair. Loss to the upper 2 inches of the spine leather; other scuffing and chips to the leather spine, hinges and corners. The 3 maps toward the front each with some tearing and a few minor tape repairs; fold-out map of the plan of the city is in 3 separate pieces. The color plates are in at at least Very Good condition. Binding still secure. Hungerford's small railroad-themed bookplate affixed to the front fly leaf. A used copy of this magnificent work, with nice provenance.

Publisher's green cloth gilt. 852pp. Illustrated with maps and plates, several of them folding, duotones, color plates, and engravings. Frontispiece maps torn with one detached but complete, light stain on front board, a very good or a little better copy. Inscribed by New York Councilman Thomas Brady to Mr. Cogswell: "Compliments of Councilman Thos. Brady to Mr. Cogswell Master Machinist Brooklyn Navy Yard New York," with contemporary pencil notation "May 1863.
