New York: Scribner's, 1956. Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Decorative gray and pink paper-covered boards quarterbound in black cloth. Both the spine and the front panel are stamped in silver. Octavo. [xix] + 504pps. First Edition (Scribner's A-9.56). There is very mild rubbing to the tips, otherwise clean, tight, square, and bright. The text is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a new mylar sleeve, has faint touches of rubbing to the extremities and to the white rear panel; the original price (5.00) is intact. An excellent, collector's-quality copy. Selected, edited, and with an Introduction by Julia Scribner Bigham. ".'The Marjorie Rawlings Reader' is designed to give, within the compass of one volume, a selection, from the best of this writer's work, that shall be both representative and revealing of its various aspects. Something from almost every book, the novels, the autobiographical narrative, and the collection of short stories, has been included. In making the selection from the novels and the autobiographical narrative, care has been taken to choose not only what seemed the best and most characteristic but, also, what could stand alone, apart from its context, as a complete and self-sufficient unit. One novel, Mrs. Rawlings' first, 'South Moon Under,' has been included in its entirety. The collection, as a whole, gives one a sense both of the scope and the quality of Marjorie Rawlings' achievement. The reader and the student will find here the gist and core of the work of one of America's most representative writers."
