Richmond: Hogarth Press, 1919. Beige paper wraps with black lettering, stapled binding, pp. 10. Originally published in 1917 with a piece by Leonard Woolf as the first publication of The Hogarth Press in Richmond. This is the first separate printing, (although the cover states Second Edition). Just a hint of dust soiling to the covers, the staples are beginning to oxidize and there is a flattened crease to the corner of the upper panel, otherwise a remarkable copy, fine indeed. Kirkpatrick A2(b).. First Separate Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine. Octavo.

Description:
Steinbeck, John. The Long Valley. New York: Viking Press, 1938. First Printing of the First US Edition. First Printing. A Near Fine copy with the usual age darkening to the front pastedown in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with gentle wear to the extremities, and a short closed edge tear at the head of the spine. A collectible copy of this collection of classic Steinbeck fiction. This volume of stories collected with the encouragement of his longtime editor Pascal Covici serves as a wonderful introduction to the work of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Set in the beautiful Salinas Valley of California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themselves in the world, these stories reflect Steinbeck's characteristic interests: the tensions between town and country, laborers and owners, past and present. Included here are the O. Henry Prize-winning story "The Murder"; "The Chrysanthemums," perhaps Steinbeck's most challenging story, both personally and artistically;…

London: James R. Osgood McIlvaine, 1891.. Small quarto. Gilt green cloth backed cream cloth over boards, elaborately decorated in gilt and red. Plates, illustrations and decorated endsheets. Binding a bit darkened, with some pale discolorations at edge, 1895 ownership signature on preliminary blank, corners a trifle worn, the plates by Shannon somewhat faded (as usual) but still legible, a few small nicks and a short tear to the edges of the front free endsheet but a good, sound copy, a few leaves unopened. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1922. Signed and Numbered First. Hardcover. Very Good with no dust jacket/No Dustjacket. From the signed, limited, numbered first printing, this is number 266, signed by the author at the limitation page opposite the full title. The pages are bright saving some toning around the deckled edges and quite clean except for a very few scattered spots of foxing; no owners' marks; the quarter cloth binding leans gently to the right but remains tight; the paper boards and paper title plate at the spine show some chipping around the edges, with a pressure mark at the bottom right front corner, a small inward turn and surface scuff at the top left rear corner, and some surface creasing at the corners and right edge of the title plate; some fading is also evident along the head edges of the paper and along the right rear, and the title plate is age-toned; nonetheless, a remarkably clean and attractive book, well-preserved. 459pp.; an extra copy of the title plate is tipped in at the…

Description:
Henry and Co. London. 1893. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Original blue buckram, lettered in gilt. Housed in a custom green cloth slipcase and chemise. Small bookplate to front pastedown, related bibiliographic material pasted to endpapers. Shaw's very scarce first play, published in an edition, according to Laurence, of "not more than 500" copies. It was not an overwhelming bestseller. Shaw wrote to John Lane (quoted in Laurence) that the publisher "never advertised it even once; and the sale, which was only effected by great perseverance & determination on the part of the purchasers, was 150 copies." When the publisher retired in December 1897, they ceded to Shaw 194 sets of unbound sheets, which Shaw claimed to have commissioned Sotheran & Co. to bind for him. "So few of these [in purple cloth] in the Sotheran binding have turned up, however, that it is unlikely Shaw had all of the copies bound; a considerable number must eventually have been pulped â¦" Copies in green cloth have been noted as well,…

" It was not recognized that the ordeal of consciousness, as developed by George Eliot and Henry James, was Virginia Woolf's starting point for the novel of the future where, as she put it in 'The Mark on the Wall' (1917), her plan was to follow the mental track of 'modest mouse-coloured people ⦠Those are the depths [novelists] will explore, those the phantoms they will pursue, leaving the…

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
