Los Angeles: Copley Gallery, 1948. A fine copy. 25 x 18 cm. 39 pages. Printed on multi-colored papers. Original cloth-backed boards. FIRST EDITION, one of 513 copies designed by Ernst and printed by Lynton R. Kistler. This copy unnumbered. Includes brief texts by Andre Breton and Dorothea Tanning. Copley claimed that this was the first full retrospective of Ernst's works: It included around 300 pieces lent by collectors and dealers, including Julien Levy, Alexander Iolas, Pierre Matisse, Walter Arensberg, Roland Penrose, and, amazingly, MoMA.

The Copley Galleries existed for only six months, in 1948 and 1949, but its groundbreaking shows contributed to one of the most important collections of Surrealist art in the United States: that of Walter and Louise Arensberg. Few galleries, and even fewer museums, were interested in exhibiting Surrealist work, but Copley Gallery's shows of Ernst, Magritte, Man Ray, Cornell, Matta, and Duchamp profoundly influenced the Arensberg's collecting.
