On side page edges there is a 2 inch high irregularly shaped bit about 3/4 inch up from the bottom that has a slight brown stain but this stain does not bleed inside onto the pages. Inner end papers are overall green with a coloured fish jumping with its mouth open past a sign in the water saying McElligot’s Pool with a chicken standing on top of the sign. At the front ffep the sewing of the binding shows as tiny white dots. Back end papers are same as front (but the binding sewing is not visible) and the price of $2.50 is marked in small pencilled numbers, the free back end paper has an old light brown stain at bottom corner 3 1/4 H x 7/8 inches W at widest going down to 3/8 inch W. Small bit of age darkening on edges of some pages. For a book that was owned by a little girl, and for the age of the book, this volume is in remarkable condition. Illustrated by Dr. Seuss. Lovely colour and black and white illustrations.

Synopsis

In this colorful picture book, a boy named Marco goes fishing in a small pond called McElligot’s Pool. As he sits waiting for a bite, a farmer calls him a fool and says “You’ll never catch fish in McElligot’s Pool!” Marco, however, refuses to be discouraged and spends the rest of the story describing all the fish that could be coming to McElligot’s Pool from the ocean. The story ends with Marco still fishing and the farmer scratching his beard and looking confused. The use of color and illustrations blur the line between fantasy and reality during Marco’s story, creating one of the most interesting aspects of the book. The text is made up of catchy rhymes and intriguing fish descriptions. The pictures complement the text and make the fish descriptions seem real. Interestingly, Seuss illustrates every other page in black and white. At the beginning of the story when Marco sits by the pond, the black and white emphasizes the concrete reality of the Marco talking to the farmer. After page one, every other page is in color. The color magnifies Marco’s fantasy about all of the fish, making them seem beautiful and real. At the same time, the black and white pages make Marco’s fish descriptions seem realistic.

WILLOWBAY BOOKS

THERE IS NO COVID-19 IN MY STORE AND MY SALES ARE ONLINE ONLY. IMPORTANT NOTE RE POSTAGE: I love books and most of my books are NEW or LIKE NEW. I'm very careful in describing my books accurately and I've done so to the best of my ability using the IOBA Book Condition guidelines. All items are from a smoke-free, clean, dry environment. My books are from a large private collection, very well taken care of and rarely handled. All descriptions and photos are of the actual books I'm selling. I'm happy to answer any questions regarding my books, just ask. IMPORTANT RE POSTAGE: I'm in Canada so books to the USA/Other Countries are International shipments and may be delayed by CUSTOMS and/or HOMELAND SECURITY. I'm using the Biblio standard postage matrix, which gives average postage fees, therefore sometimes for an OVERSIZE or LARGE heavy book or expensive book, the postage may be too low and may require extra charges. If I know this in advance, I will notify the buyer before the order is processed.

This is not a huge book warehouse, it is a small one-owner store run by a true book lover. POSSIBLE DELAYS: I'm elderly and disabled and while this usually does not cause a delay in order processing, it sometimes may cause a small delay for me to get to the post office. Thanks for your understanding. I will always email you with the date your package was shipped, and shipping method used.

I'm sure you'll enjoy looking through my books, and purchasing from WILLOWBAY BOOKS. Thanks. Ms. Bronwen Kathy Williams, Ontario, Canada.
