Elisha Oscar Crosby made a visit to California in 1849 simply to find out for himself whether the stories of gold were "humbug." Crosby went on to represent California as a delegate from Sacramento to the Constitutional Convention of 1849 and assisted in adopting the legal code of California. He was also instrumental in paving the way for neighborly diplomacy in Central America.
