New York: Jemima M. Lewer, 1839. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto size, 397 pp., from the library of Edwin Grabhorn. American Edition noted on title page; its London parent, "The Metropolitan: A monthly journal of literature, science, and the fine arts" was a London monthly journal established by Thomas Campbell in 1831 and continued, under various editors, until 1850. This volume, which contains January to June, 1839, is one of three we acquired all of which have a vintage bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown for the Alta California Bookstore, in Albany California, and printed below their name is the notation "From the Library of ED GRABHORN at the Grabhorn Press".

___DESCRIPTION: Half marbled boards with black leather, gilt lettering and rules on the spine, light brown endpapers. This volume contains the issues of January to June, 1839. This volume begins with the title page/Table of Contents for January, 1839, followed by the rest of the months in order until one reaches the title page for June, 1839. Immediately following that page is the Index to Volume VII, apparently inserted out of order, as it is immediately followed by the pages for June. The Volume VII Index is included at the very back of this volume. Quarto size (10 1/8" by 6 3/8"), pagination: (i-ii), 1-388 with monthly title pages inserted, followed by 2-page Index. ***Interesting side note: there is a lightly penciled notation at the top of the title page for May, which says "Edited by Bulwer" - we do not know if this notation was by Ed Grabhorn or someone else, we also do not know if the author of this note intended to state that the editor was Edward Bulwer-Lytton, although the time period is correct - we can only conjecture.

___CONDITION: Overall, this volume is near fine with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, corners only slightly bent and with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright with the exception of some old dampstaining at the bottom corner of the text block which affects roughly the middle third of the book (although it just overlaps some of the bottom text lines, they are still easily readable), and it is entirely free of prior owner markings other than the vintage bookseller's ticket referred to above. We are grading as very good only due to the dampstaining, some overall edgewear particularly to the joints and some rubbing to the head and tail of the spine with a small amount of loss at the head, text block edges are lightly foxed.
