Max Wilhelm Meyer (1853 - 1910) was a German astronomer, naturalist and writer, head and founder of Urania (scientific society, founded in Berlin in 1888, following an idea of A.von Humboldt by M. Wilhelm Meyer and Wilhelm Foerster)
The book includes a well-known astronomical work devoted to the study and description of the Moon, the Sun, planets of the solar system, nebulae, star clusters and other cosmic objects of the Universe: their visual observation, instrumental measurement of spectra and characteristics, as well as scientific activities and discoveries of prominent astronomers. A very large number of engraving portraits and drawings, maps, photographs in the text. On separate full-page inserts: astronomical photographs of lunar craters, b / w. and colored artistic drawings of the types of meteorites, the alleged landscapes of the surfaces of planets, solar prominences, comets, nebulae of different shapes, various observatories and astronomical equipment, other space objects, as well as pictures of the view of the starry sky and its objects observed from different places on the Earth, two-color maps of the equatorial areas, the southern and northern starry sky, star clusters - on the spreadsheet.
The book became one of the pearls of popular science literature of its time, having withstood several editions in Russia.
The text is adorned and supplemented by 300ed illustrations made by German painters in Leipzig specially ordered by the Prosveshchenie publishing company, as well as photos taken by leading observatories in Europe and America. A pleasant addition to the publication is a bibliographic index of Russian literature on various issues of astronomy, compiled by the translation editor, Russian astronomer, Professor S. P. Glazenap.
