A wide-ranging dive into the history of alcohol and temperance movements. Includes sections on non-alcohol stimulants (arrack, pulque, and coca), causes of intemperance (effort to drown present sorrow), and "The Life and Death of King Alcohol," a fifteen page poem which includes the stirring passage, "In conclave met, in Hell's dark Hall, I, Satan, give King Alcohol, Full power the human race to kill, And with their souls these caverns fill." Small dampstain to top edge of and some toning to preliminaries. Clean and bright. Original blind stamped boards with spine lettered in gilt.
