Uniformly bound hardcovers, 4 x 6.5 inches, half bound in brown calf over blue, red, and yellow marbled boards; binding is later, after 1770. Five raised bands on spines, with gilt devices in four panels and two panels with dark brown leather labels and gilt lettering. Matching marbled endpapers. Page edges are dyed yellow. Occasional small black and white illustrations in the text of each volume. Bindings are generally strong and intact; the front cover of vol. 3 is detached; the front hinge of Vol. 4 is cracked; other vols. have fine external cracking at the spine edges. Marbled paper surfaces are rubbed in places. Spines are worn and flaking in all volumes, with three-quarters of the labels missing. Corners chipped and worn. Pages clean and unmarked. Pages in good condition, with minor fine sporadic foxing. Pages lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple.
