The Strand, London: Jacob Tonson, 1766. Hardback. Very Good/No Jacket. 904 12mo. Three uniform leather bound volumes, re-backed (not recently), retaining original spine strips. Top and fore-edges tinted. Volume 1 contains Poems on Several Occasions; Volume 2 includes Cato, a Tragedy; Volume 3 includes an essay, in the form of conversations, setting out what can be learned from the study of Greek and Roman coins ('Dialogues Upon the Usefulness of Ancient Medals'). Volume 1 has a portrait of Addison as frontispiece; thsi appears to have been moved durin g the rebacking from Volume 2 (evidenced by offsetting of this portrait to the verso of the contents page of Volume 2). Volume 2 has an engraving intended to be bound facing the title page of that volume, but bound in opposite page 3, as well as an engraving bound in its rightful place opposite the start of 'The Drummer Or, the Haunted-House' (p 183). Volume 3 is illustrated with several pages of drawings of Greek and Roman coins (pp 171 to 133, single sided). Condition notes: Leather rubbed and worn along edges, corners bumped, but bindings firm, and overall an attractive set. Previous owner's surname to front free end paper.

The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
