Boston: Light & Stearns, 1836. Spine lightly sunned, some foxing, but a very attractive, unsophisticated copy. 16mo (11.3 x 6.7 cm). iv, 69 pages. Publisher's blue embossed cloth, gilt-title within arabesque frame on front cover. FIRST EDITION, with terminal leaf used as the rear pastedown as often. Whittier's epic narrative poem used the life of the Native American warrior Mogg Hegon "as a frame-work for sketches of the scenery of New England, and of its early inhabitants. In portraying the Indian character, he has followed, as closely as his story would admit, the rough but natural delineations of Church, Mayhew, Charlevoix, and Roger Williams; and in so doing he has necessarily discarded much of the romance which poets and novelists have thrown around the ill-fated red man" (preface). It was first published in two issues of The New England Magazine in 1835. American Imprints 42466; BAL 21697; Sabin 103809. In entirely original condition, unrestored.
