Dust jacket is tanned and lightly soiled, corners and edges have wear and tears, loss on rear top edge, the author's face on front is patchy, spine darkened, loss head/tail, price has been clipped. Tan linen boards are darkened around the edges and on the spine, light warp to the boards. About an inch f grey paper is adhered to the front endpaper. French-fold pages illuminated by Alberto Sangorski, reproduced by the Graphic Engraving Company for publisher Basil Blackwell. An exquisite 24 page book, uncommon with dust jacket.

Exquisitely illuminated on every page in full color and gilt by Alberto Sangorski. The edges are worn, inner hinges cracked and vellum lightly stained with age, else this is a very good copy. The scarce dustwrapper is present. It has significant wear especially to the edges of the folds and with a worn hole in the spine, Still it gives a good appearance. .

Spine in 5 uneven compartment wirh raise bands, gilt, and with gilt title and a depiction of Excalibur. Distinctive Cockerel marbled paper is inset into the upper and lower boards, which are tooled with blind rules. The upper board features a gilt 'A' bearing a crown. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpaper, with the stamp of Sangorski and Sutcliffe on the bottom margin of the inside upper board. A fine copy. In publisher's simple card slipcase showing wear the the folds and edges. With the Rockwell Kent designed bookplate of John Whiting Friel and Helen Otillie Friel. .

Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.

Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering."
