Volume 10 is missing. Volumes 2 and 8 without spine. Current sines are slightly rubbed. Volume 5 spine is partialy torn from front board. Text is clean and intact with no markings. Some pages have age spots. Remains are in very good, clean, tight condition.

First edition of Volume 1, 1737, London. Volume 1 of 2. Modern fine binding of quarter leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. Interior is good. Library stamp on title page, some notations on preface, occasional pencil notes in text. Title page is backed with rice paper. Some edges chipped not affecting text. Last page is high quality facsimile. Paginates: [12], 420. Modern blanks. Extremely rare. OCLC locates 10 physical copies. Auction records do not find any sold at auction. Charles Erskine Scott Wood [C.E.S. Wood (1852 –1944)] was a successful author, civil liberties advocate, artist, soldier, and attorney. He served as a lieutenant with the 21st Infantry Regiment, fought in the Nez Perce War in 1877, and was present at the surrender of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce. It was Wood who transcribed, and perhaps embellished, Chief Joseph's famous speech, which ended with: "My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever." The two men became close friends.
Following his military service Wood became a pacifist and self-proclaimed anarchist. He did a brief turn as Mark Twain's publisher [1601] and offered advice and money to radical journalist John Reed.
