Paris, 1768. unbound. very good. Rene Le Berryais. Fruit Botanical. Stipple engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 10.25" x 8.75".

Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) was an engineer, physician and a botanist based in Paris, France. He was commissioned by the French Academy of Sciences in 1728 to investigate a disease that was destroying the saffron plants in Gatinais. His publication of the findings enabled him to become a member and later the president of the "Academie des Sciences". His constant desire for experimentation, to know more and curiosity about how things worked enabled him to write on topics such as agriculture, metallurgy, meteorology, boat-building, sylviculture, etc. However, it is his contributions to botanical and horticultural illustration that has left a lasting impression. This engraving of blackberries is from "Traite des Arbres Fruitiers", which was his most ambitious work. A few small tears to left edge. Please visit our gallery for more Monceau prints.
