About This Item

3 volumes of French engraver F.A. David's depiction of the gems, engraved stones and statues in the collection of the Medicis, Grand Dukes of Tuscany, at the Museum of Florence.

All copperplates drawn and engraved by Francois-Anne David with explanations by F. Mulot, Doctor in Theology at the Faculty of Paris.

Vol. 1: Ancient gems, 258 pp, 95 plates of portraits of Roman emperors, mythological gods and goddesses, philosophers, poets, monsters, etc.
Vol. 2: Ancient gems, 176 pp, 96 plates of gods and goddesses, cupids, Bacchantes and figures from Roman mythology
Vol. 3: Statues, 143pp, 72 plates of gods, goddesses, Bacchantes and figures from Greek and Roman mythology.

Condition: Leather spines disintegrating, boards hanging by a thread, text and tissue guards foxed, but plates mostly clean and sharp, although slightly browned.

Francois-Anne David was a French engraver and publisher, a pupil of Le Bas, who lived and worked in Paris (1741-1824).
